In the past, men had been treated to the drug Viagra, a popular treatment for erectile dysfunction, for years. Now, in the United States, men have the option to take Viagra, which treats the underlying problem of impotence. But doctors say there's still a chance men might have side effects.
The drug, which was first introduced as a treatment for Parkinson's disease in 1998, was approved for use in men by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in November. And it's been on the market for years.
"The drug has been a game-changer for men with ED," said Dr. Robert W. Schlosser, the director of the Men's Health Clinic at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.
The drug was first used by Bob Dole, an American pharmaceutical executive, in 1984. In 1993, the FDA approved Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction. But by then, Pfizer had developed an innovative pill that could work for men with ED. Pfizer had previously marketed its pill, sildenafil, as a heart medication, but Pfizer's drug was approved for that use.
But a study released in 2013 showed that men who took Viagra for more than a year experienced more problems with impotence than those who didn't take the drug. In fact, men who took Viagra twice a week had more problems, the study showed, than those who didn't take the pill.
"The problem is that there are many reasons why men may take Viagra, and not all of them," said Dr. John A. Ricks, a urology professor at New York University who has studied Viagra in men with erectile dysfunction. "But the majority of men who take Viagra don't suffer from ED."
Viagra is a prescription drug that Pfizer is making available to the general public, but Pfizer says it still sells only over-the-counter.
"There are some men who may not be able to afford Viagra or who may be looking to buy Viagra," Schlosser said.
Viagra is one of a handful of drugs approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men over 40. Pfizer's Viagra has already received approval from the FDA, which said it would allow it to treat erectile dysfunction in men who have been diagnosed with the disease.
While Pfizer says it will continue to market Viagra as a treatment for ED, the company said its drug is still sold over-the-counter. "We can't say that we are thrilled with what we have done," Schlosser said.
Some men who took Viagra for more than a year got worse problems with impotence. "In men who used to take Viagra, most of them suffered a few serious side effects," said Dr. John D. MacIntyre, who oversees a U. S. fertility center. "You might not have the side effects, but they did come back after six months."
Viagra is only approved for use in men who are currently taking nitrate-based medications. Viagra is only approved for use in men who have a history of heart disease or certain heart problems. Pfizer says its drug does not treat the underlying problem of heart disease or angina, and so does not treat the underlying cause of ED. But Pfizer says its treatment may be more effective if men have a family history of ED.
And in some men, side effects are even more pronounced. Dr. Robert J. W. Schlosser, director of the Division of Urology at St. Joseph's Hospital in New York City, says Viagra is associated with a "significantly higher risk of major adverse events," including a heart attack and a stroke.
"If you are taking any form of nitrate or a nitric oxide-based drug that you are taking, you are at a higher risk of side effects," he said.
The drug may not be the right choice for you if you already have heart disease or angina, Schlosser said. "If you have a family history of the disease, you may not be on Viagra. And you may be taking nitrates or nitric oxide donors."
Viagra can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure, so men taking it should avoid driving or operating machinery until they know what they're doing.
It's also not safe to take Viagra with other drugs that may interact with the drug, including some anti-hypertensive drugs.
The FDA says that if you take Viagra daily, you shouldn't take it for more than three days.

A man who was arrested on Wednesday for selling fake pills for $2,000 has been sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution.
The man is currently scheduled to be sentenced in the Albert Court on Oct. 14. The court will hear his case on Nov. 3.
He is scheduled to appear at the Albert Court on Dec.
“The court will consider the information in relation to the sale of the drugs,” court spokesman Kevin R. Taylor said. “It’s important for people who have a history of abuse to be educated about the dangers of purchasing drugs from unreliable sources, and we are here to address that.”
The man was arrested after he sold fake Viagra to a friend on the internet, the court heard.
The man was charged with two counts of trafficking in counterfeit drugs and possession of misbranded drugs. The man was ordered to pay $3,500 in restitution to a bank in Alberta.
According to court documents, the man had a total of nine pills worth approximately $2,000 each.
The fake drugs, which contained the fake methamphetamine, also had the wrong ingredients.
The man was scheduled to be sentenced in the Albert Court on Nov.
“The court is aware that the man’s arrest in the Albert Court was initiated by a group of people,” Taylor said.
“The man was arrested on Wednesday. He is currently scheduled to appear in the Albert Court on Nov. 3, and the court will hear his case in the future.”
Taylor said the man has been a regular customer of the Internet pharmacy, which he purchased from his brother. He also bought some generic Viagra from a Canadian online pharmacy.
Taylor said the man had no known connections to the internet pharmacy, but he had made the purchase on his own.
“I know this man has no known connections to the internet pharmacy. He was using Canadian Internet Pharmacy, but he had never bought any generic Viagra from that,” Taylor said.
Taylor said the man has not been charged with any crime because he is in court on Nov.
“He is a legitimate person and we will deal with that,” Taylor said.
In the meantime, the man has been advised to call his local police or the Alberta Alcoholic Beverage Co. to report any suspicious activities.
